Benjamin H. Teague papers, 1858-1898.

Papers chiefly consist of letters and a scrapbook. Letters (1883-1898) to Teague concern the collection of various items including stamps, an article by Teague about the Hampton Legion, and social matters. Included is a letter (1888) from Jefferson Davis concerning Confederate relics; and a letter (1898) from Varina Davis thanking Teague and his fellow Confederate veterans for the sympathy and esteem they expressed for her son. Scrapbook (1858-1892) contains newspaper clippings concerning the Confederate States of America, events of the Civil War, Confederate veterans, Jefferson Davis, Reconstruction, railroads, and other topics; railroad tickets; maps, including reproductions of maps of Fort Moultrie and Charles Town (Charleston, S.C.); pamphlets printed by the Soldiers' Tract Association (Richmond, Va.) and other printed material; currency; calling and business cards; Confederate tax receipts; memorabilia, including swatches of cloth, ribbons, and pieces of wood; photographs, including a card with photos and names of the "Radical Members of the S.C. Legislature"; a notary certificate for L.C. Hendricks signed by S.C. Governor D.H. Chamberlain and Secretary of State Henry E. Hayne; and letters, including two letters (1889) from John Johnson to B.H. Teague regarding "vessels on both sides sunk or wrecked in and around Charleston," and a note (1865) asking for food, written by Oliver Fitts (Co. G, 35th North Carolina Reg.), "thrown from the windows of the Libby Prison 16 days after evacuation of Richmond [Va.]."
